Thank you for contacting me about the appointment of peers.
The House of Lords continues to play an important constitutional role in reviewing and scrutinising legislation.
Members of the House of Lords are appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister. All nominations for peerages are vetted by the House of Lords Appointments Commission to ensure the highest standards of propriety. The Commission is an independent, advisory, non-departmental public body and considers a range of criteria before approving any nominations. Once approved by the Prime Minister, appointments are formalised by The King.
It is important to note that there is no automatic entitlement to a peerage for any holder of high office in public life.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
