Thank you for contacting me about Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary.
I welcome the re-appointment of Ms Braverman as Secretary of State for the Home Department on 25 October 2022. With her experience as Attorney General and the MP of Fareham since 2015, I believe she will bring the knowledge and experience necessary for the role.
As you are aware, under the last Administration, she made an error of judgement, recognised her mistake and took accountability for her actions, stepping down from office. After consideration, the new Prime Minister is confident she has recognised her mistake and considers the matter closed.
All Ministers are bound by the Ministerial Code, and the Prime Minister expects all Ministers to uphold the code and hold the highest standards. The code allows for a range of sanctions for breaches, and on the recommendation of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, the code was updated in May 2022 to make that clear.
The Home Secretary is now focused on tackling illegal migration, controlling our borders and making our streets safer. She has also committed to continue the Conservative Government’s key pledge to put 20,000 new police officers on the streets, with over 15,000 new police officers already on our streets.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
