The traffic code clearly states “that the onus will be on you to provide evidence that you did so to allow an emergency vehicle through, and that this may be considered as mitigation”. This means that a court may still decide that it was not in fact necessary for the driver to cross a red light and could still be prosecuted on these grounds.
Running a red-light comes with a fixed penalty of £100 and three penalty points on your driving license. It is therefore important to ensure that you are following the highway code at all times.
