Thank you for contacting me about Cyprus.
The UK's position on this issue is clear and unchanged. The UK, along with the rest of the international community, with the sole exception of Turkey, does not recognise the self-declared "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" as an independent state.
The UK only recognises one Cypriot state – the Republic of Cyprus – and only one government as the sole legitimate government. I recognise that the status quo in Cyprus causes serious difficulties for Turkish Cypriots such as the issue of flights to Ercan and this is why my ministerial colleagues and I continue to support the UN-led process to reach a just, lasting and comprehensive solution to the Cyprus issue to end the division of the island and meet the needs of both Cypriot communities.
The UK's diplomatic engagement with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities is consistently directed towards this end. The UK will continue to urge all sides to demonstrate flexibility and compromise to find a solution to the Cyprus Issue.
While this will no doubt be of great disappointment to you, I hope it has at least made the UK's and my own position clear.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
